Bowling Green (Ohio) State University, $1.7 million from Allen and Carol Schmidthorst for the Schmidthorst Pavilion to house the team and practice area at the proposed Stroh Center.

Carroll University (Waukesha, Wis.), $50,000 from the Helen Bader Foundation Inc. to enhance the university’s impact on Waukesha County’s older adults by strengthening service-learning partnerships across academic disciplines.

Culver (Ind.) Academies, $20 million from alum Frank Batten and his wife, Jane, to provide additional compensation and benefits for outstanding faculty members serving as mentors to other faculty. Also, Batten agreed to match any gifts up to $50 million made to the school’s endowment by Jan. 31, 2010.

DePaul University (Chicago), $500,000 from Fortis Investments for scholarships in the College of Commerce. Also, $236,000 from the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation for the Chicago Wilderness Land Management Research Program; $190,000 from the U.S. Department of Defense to study neural plasticity and neuron-rehabilitation following traumatic brain injury; $153,000 from The Chicago Board of Education for DePaul’s Center for Urban Education; $41,000 from The McCormick Foundation to host a McCormick Specialized Reporting Institute in September on “An Inside Look at Chicago’s Olympic Bid”; $30,000 from the Chicago Title Insurance Co to renew sponsorship of The Real Estate Center; $24,000 from the National Science Foundation for “20 Years of Wavelets”; $22,000 from The Patrick and Anna M. Cudahy Fund for two public interest law programs; $18,000 from the U.S. Department of Education to translate Japanese mathematics assessment materials; and $12,500 from Chicago Area Foundation for Legal Services to train, support and provide legal services to community-based organizations and enhance legal services for low-income immigrants and refugees.

Dominican University, $76,500 from the Illinois Board of Higher Education Cooperative Work Study Program to subsidize the salaries of eligible students.

Franklin (Ind.) College, $375,000 from Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc. to strengthen and extend programs and relationships that help students find jobs in Indiana after graduation. Also, $100,000 from the Hearst Foundations to endow a scholarship fund for underserved and underrepresented students.

Grinnell (Iowa) College, $500,000 from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to establish a program to encourage students, especially those in culturally underrepresented groups, to pursue college teaching careers.

Madonna University (Livonia, Mich.) $1.5 million challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation, Troy, Mich., for construction of its Science and Media Building.

Marietta (Ohio) College, $40,000 from Marathon Oil Corp. for student scholarships and faculty development in the petroleum engineering department. Also, $37,000 from the Ohio Department of Education to initiate a Summer Honors Institute for gifted high school students and $20,000 from the Doris and Floyd Kimble Foundation toward the completion of the Anderson Hancock Planetarium.

Milwaukee School of Engineering, $250,000 from The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation Inc. to renovate and upgrade general and organic chemistry laboratories.

Northern Michigan University (Marquette) Foundation, an 18-hole course, buildings and equipment from Chocolay Golf Club owners Joe and Patsie Gibbs of Interlochen, Mich., valued at $1.6 million. NMU plans to operate the course for the upcoming golf season, with proceeds going to scholarships and academic programming. Also, $1 million from Upper Peninsula natives Gloria and Bill Jackson to fund study abroad experiences for one student from each of the 15 U.P. counties annually.

Oakton Community College (Des Plaines, Ill.), $60,000 to enhance campus security from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, with funds from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Also $46,475 from the Illinois Board of Higher Education Cooperative Work Study Program for paid student internships, and $20,000 from the Chicago Tribune Charities Holiday Campaign to support the adult literacy program.

Ohio Northern University (Ada), $79,044 from the Ohio Department of Education to host its annual Summer Honors Institute for gifted and talented Ohio high school students.

Otterbein College (Westerville, Ohio), $482,992 from the National Science Foundation to provide scholarships and enhance science educational programming for students through Cardinal Science Scholars.

Pine Technical College (Pine City, Minn.) $1.9 million from the U.S. Department of Labor to support teaching advanced manufacturing technology skills to high school students, and out-of-work or underemployed adults.

College of St. Catherine, Minneapolis St. Paul, Minn., an estimated $20 million perpetual legacy endowment from an anonymous donor for initiatives in the School of Health. The largest gift in the college’s 104-year history will ensure a $1 million annual gift. Also, $150,000 from the National Science Foundation to purchase a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer and expand chemistry lab curriculum.

Saginaw (Mich.) Valley State University, $197,703 from the Michigan Department of Education to provide professional development to area principals and teachers. Also, $76,878 from the Michigan Department of Education for continued funding of the Mathematics and Science Centers Program, and $31,500 from the Michigan Department of Community Health to provide scholarships to nursing students.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) College, $280,000 from Lilly Endowment Inc. for the Initiative to Promote Opportunities through Educational Collaboration.

St. Norbert College (De Pere, Wis.), $4 million from Donald and Patricia Schneider for a new athletic complex to be named the Donald J. Schneider Outdoor Athletic Complex.

South Central College (Faribault and North Mankato, Minn.), $1.9 million from the U.S. Department of Labor to support a new two-year mechatronics degree program.

Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education (Dayton), $8.5 million from The Department of the Air Force for the Student Research Program.

University of Toledo (Ohio), $2 million from Dr. and Mrs. Julius Jacobson II to The College of Medicine to name the Center for Clinical and Translational Research. Also, $1 million from alumnus Parviz Boodjeh, founder, chairman and executive officer of Discount Drug Mart for scholarships and construction of eight laboratories to expand the pharmacy program.

Trine University (Angola, Ind.), $500,000 from 1966 graduate Cliff Ryan and his wife, Sigrid, to help refurbish the T. Furth Center for Performing Arts. Also, $380,000 from Angola business owner Carl A. Strock for Zollner Stadium, and $80,000 from the ExxonMobil and Harris Foundation to host an ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp.

Wabash College (Crawfordsville, Ind.), $1.7 million from the estate of 1960 graduate Norman Rowe to endow a need-based scholarship program for entering freshmen. Western Illinois University (Macomb), $375,000 from AT&T for a program helping at-risk ninth grade students in Rock Island. Also, $64,000 from the Illinois Arts Council for arts programming.

Western Illinois University-Quad Cities (Moline), $1 million from the John Deere Foundation and The Moline Foundation for the university’s new engineering program that begins in fall 2009.

Wittenberg University (Springfield, Ohio), $1.5 million form Robert E. “Bob” and Lynn Ness for and endowed chair in entrepreneurship.

Wooster (Ohio) College and three others (Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, Augustana College in Illinois and Washington College in Maryland) $300,000 from The Teagle Foundation to study the educational impact of senior capstone programs.
